Pandemic Community Support

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic meant that some of our programs planned for 2020 were not able to run. However, our focus on supporting community initiatives did not waver.

In collaboration with A̱ka̱la Society, in 2020 our youth programs shifted to an online ‘Digital Youth Network’ format. Here, our program alumni and other Musgamagw Dzawada̱’enux̱w youth gathered to connect, learn new skills, and focus on the Kwak’wala language. Throughout the pandemic we also worked closely with Nawalakw to supply the communities of Ukwanalis Village (Kingcome), ‘Yalis (Alert Bay), Wuikinuxv Village, and Gwa'yas'dums (Gilford Village) with PPE and other emergency and hygiene supplies.

The pandemic nudged communities towards thinking more strategically about food security. This gave Sea to Cedar the opportunity to step in and provide support for new and expanding community gardens and food security initiatives, which inspired our emerging food security initiatives.
